PARENTS AND STUDENTS SHOP FOR AN INNOVATIVE PROGRAM AT SHOWCASE

Savvy Christmas shoppers usually embark to the retail stores beginning the day after Thanksgiving. With the economy in turmoil, parents have an opportunity to participate in a cost free type of shopping the following week. On Wednesday, December 2, 2009 from 5pm – 9pm, parents and students will have the opportunity to shop for an innovative program. Various programs will be on hand including Nova Schools, Reassignments, Broward Virtual, and Magnet Programs. Interested in Performing & Visual Arts? How about Aviation, Pre-Law or Pre-Med? These are just a few of the areas of study offered as part of Broward County Public Schools magnet programs.

On Wednesday, December 2, 2009, students and their parents are invited to the Broward County Convention Center to preview the wide variety of innovative programs available in Broward’s public schools. The convention center is located at 1950 Eisenhower Blvd., Fort Lauderdale. The event will run 5-9 p.m. and is free to the public. The exposition-style event will present more than 40 magnet schools with displays, literature, hands-on and interactive activities, and information on everything from applications to transportation to reassignments. Computers will be available to parents so they can instantly apply on-line. Staff will be on hand to process application information for parents of elementary, middle, and high school students. In addition, translators will be available to help those parents who speak Spanish, Portuguese, and Haitian Creole.

All Broward resident students in grades K-12 are eligible to apply to an innovative program. Students applying to kindergarten must be five years old by September 1, 2010. Applicants to middle and high school magnet programs should bring a copy of their recent report card and standardized test scores (FCAT). Applications for the 2010/11 school year will be available and can also be submitted at Showcase 2010. The application deadline is February 17, 2010.
