Broward County School Magnet Programs: A History of Excellence
Over the last 30 years the Broward County Schools Magnet Programs have developed innovative and responsive programs. The programs are successful in a myriad ways. For example, over the last five years, magnet program enrollment has grown at a 2% higher percentage rate than the district enrollment. District magnet programs provide an outstanding education to a diverse student body. In a recent survey of magnet programs graduates, 86% said that they received positive educational experiences that do not occur in a regular high school, 90% would recommend the magnet program, and 93% said that program prepared them for college or work.
Fostering Interaction Among Students of Different Social, Economic, Ethnic and Racial Backgrounds
Instructional strategies incorporate cooperative learning techniques, group discussions, and team building to promote communication, respect, and cooperation between all students. Diversity training for teachers promotes student interaction by facilitating their ability to engage diverse students and increase multicultural awareness and understanding. Instructional methods and activities in the schools are designed to meet each student’s academic ability so that they can succeed. The district uses five proven strategies to meet each child’s needs; Prerequisite Academy, standards-based curriculum, alternative assessments, integration of technology, and results-driven professional development.
